University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering (UL FGG)
In 1971 a Computer Centre of the then Faculty of Architecture, Civil and Geodetic Engineering was established as the Faculty’s internal institute for the needs of education, scientific research and professional work. In the first few years of its activities its main role was education of personnel for the development of the urgently needed computer software from the area of civil engineering, as well as taking care of the Faculty’s computerization.
In autumn 1980 the institute changed its name to Institute of Structural Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Construction IT (IKPIR), which reflected the new contents and scope of its three main activity areas.
IKPIR has developed to the strongest educational-research unit at the Faculty, considering the number of employees as well as the number of performed research projects and published works.
The institute is active in the educational, research and professional activities related to nonlinear numerical analysis, computer-aided design of structures, earthquake engineering and construction IT.
In 2001 within the IKPIR institute two chairs were organised, i.e. Chair of Structural and Earthquake Engineering and Chair of Construction IT, with close mutual cooperation. This short presentation describes the Institute’s activities from 1971 to 2001, while the activities after the new organisation are presented in the presentations of both above mentioned chairs.
